Our contribution to a better world
As market leader, we are well aware of our responsibilities
towards our customers, suppliers and employees, which is why we
lead the way in various initiatives: using natural raw materials,
sponsoring sporting activities and offering our employees a
preventive health programme. Likewise, consumer health is one of
our top priorities, and we supply a wide range of products to help
consumers enjoy healthy eating.
The switch to 100% sunflower oil
As of January 2011, Aviko pre-fries its entire range of frozen
potato specialities in 100% sunflower oil. This is a significant
development, since no less than 88% of sunflower oil is made up of
mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats, which help to lower
cholesterol levels, thus reducing the risk of heart disease. Hence,
the decision to pre-fry in sunflower oil represents a
positive decision to produce healthy and responsible
food.
Responsible sourcing of palm oil
Palm oil is an important and versatile raw material used in food
manufacturing. It is entirely GM free and has the highest yield per
hectare of any oil or oilseed crop. Therefore a valuable crop for
nurturing the world's populations. However, to ensure long term
sustainable sourcing in the future we support efforts to minimize
the environmental and social impact of growing this raw material in
countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. Aviko is member of the
Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which promotes the sustainable
production of palm oil around the world. We are working towards
using only 100% RSPO-certified palm oil by 2015.
We do not use raw materials or ingredients which have been
genetically modified. That is why we do not use soybean oil, for
example, since the product's origin cannot always be satisfactorily
traced to source.
Reducing emissions and waste
We are continually working to reduce our levels of waste, energy
consumption, water consumption and emissions. While cutting down on
waste, we also reduce waste and recycle wherever possible. Aviko is
proud to have one of the sector's lowest levels of energy
consumption, thanks in part to having our own heat and power
station for generating electricity and steam. We have invested in
the heat and power station in recent years, in terms of insulating,
monitoring, waste heat recovery and optimisation, which has
resulted in energy savings of over 25%.
- Our production process is designed to extract the maximum
goodness out of every potato.
- We fry exclusively in non-hydrogenated vegetable oils.
- With customer agreement, we will transport our chilled fries in
collapsible crates, helping to reduce packaging waste.
- We have started to use special temperature-controlled vehicles
that are refrigerated using CO2, which saves fuel as
well as reducing noise levels.
