As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) strategy, Aviko is exploring opportunities for reducing
CO2 emissions during the transportation of its products.
Within this framework, and in collaboration with our logistics
partners Dasko and Donderwinkel, we recently launched two pilot
projects: cryogenic refrigeration units and
'E-mission Low'
vehicles.
Cryogenic refrigeration units
Whereas the cargo area is normally temperature-controlled by a
refrigeration unit running on a diesel generator, cryogenic
refrigeration uses carbon dioxide as a coolant. Since
CO2 is a by-product of the manufacturing industry, this
application allows it to be recycled. The use of cryogenic units
leads to a reduction of some 75% in carbon dioxide emissions
compared with diesel-based refrigeration. Furthermore, cryogenic
refrigeration is silent in operation, which is a significant
advantage when delivering to customers who are located in or close
to a residential area.
E-mission Low
vehicles
In close collaboration with Donderwinkel, one of Aviko's
transportation partners, we decided to purchase two so-called
'E-mission Low' vehicles with trailers which are
temperature-controlled using CO2. Since these vehicles
run on normal LPG fuel as well as conventional diesel, they are up
to 15% 'cleaner' than the levels laid down in the current emission
standards. These vehicles are kept in continual use in order to
reduce the level of CO2 emissions as much as
possible.
In setting up this project, Aviko has received support
from:
- Dasko transport (transportation);
- Donderwinkel (transportation);
- Thermoking (supplier of refrigeration units);
- Heiwo (truck and trailer builder).
