Aviko is proud to announce that it has applied to become
a member of the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) - with an ambition to use only 100%
certified palm oil by 2015. This step, which happened at the start
of February, could make Aviko the first in the chilled and frozen
potato category to become a member of this global
initiative.
The RSPO is a global organisation which encourages the production
of palm oil in a way that is ecologically sound, preserving the
natural habitat. It also takes into consideration the social impact
that the large scale development of palm oil plantations can have
on local communities.
This responsible step towards sustainable palm oil follows shortly
after Aviko's move to 100% sunflower oil in January 2011. Aviko
became the first to announce the global use of pure sunflower oil
in frozen specialties and now this is another giant step towards
sustainability, once again proving Aviko's commitment to Corporate
Social Responsibility.
Aviko UK General Manager, Mohammed Essa says: "After having been
the first to announce the global use of 100% sunflower oil in our
frozen specialties as of January 2011, this fantastic development
represents yet another positive step in Aviko's CSR programme."
Initially Aviko aims to use the "Book & Claim" model which
means it will advance the production of sustainable palm oil in
producing countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.
Mohammed continues: "The scope of our volume commitment in 2011
stretches to our foodservice activities in chilled and frozen
chips. This represents a substantial part of our business. Our
ambition is to be using 100% certified palm oil in 2015."
