The UK's emergence from recession is ongoing and appears to be slowly gaining in strength. Latest revised estimates (published 26.02.10) on economic growth show that gross domestic product rose by 0.3% in the fourth quarter of 2009. This represents an increase of 0.2 percentage points on the original estimate of 0.1%, which was published in January 2010.
Consumer prices index inflation - the Government's target measure - rose by 3.5% in January 2010, up 0.6 percentage points on the previous month's figure (2.9%). The target rate is 2%.

At Aviko we are committed to keeping our carbon footprint as low as possible, and as such we ensure that throughout the production process nothing is wasted. Remnants of cut potato go to animal feed, potato skins are made into fertiliser, starch is extracted from the wash water and is used as an ingredient and up to 15% of the fuel used to power the Aviko plant comes from by-products of its production. Not only that, residual heat is taken from the plant and is used to heat the local village swimming pool, and even the soil that is cleaned from the potatoes is collected and returned to the farmers! Another three months to go and we can harvest the new 2010 crop, or at least, that’s what we would normally expect. The cold winter has left cold soils, which could delay the planting season all over Europe. Depending on the weather over the next three months, the harvest could be put back by between 7-10 days.
The prospect that we’ll have to produce up to two weeks longer with the 2009 crop, plus the knowledge that the early potatoes in Southern Europe are also late, caused a slight increase in the potato market in Northern Europe. This has contradicted the early prediction that we would have an excessive 2009 crop.
Dependent on weather conditions and with today’s modern machinery, farmers are optimistic we might still have a normal start to the growing season of the 2010 crop
